The Glass Recycling Company
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on 19 May 2005, which saw the establishment of The Glass Recycling Company. Its mandate is to promote the re-use and recycling of glass containers in South Africa.
Short History of the Glass Industry
A tremendous shortage of glass during the First World War encouraged the building of a small plant in Durban. In 1918 the factory relocated to Dundee where it evolved into Union Glass Ltd, operated by South African Breweries.
At the beginning of the Second World War, a second glass factory, Pretoria Glass Works, came into being. Not only did they produce glass containers but also made tumblers, fruit bowls and other glassware.
After the Second World War, the Glass Works were among the leaders in the great industrial expansion in this country and development was rapid. A new plant was built at Wadeville near Germiston. This factory started operating in 1948 and has grown constantly ever since.
The demand for glass is increasing annually by approximately 5%. Currently South Africa has 4 glass manufacturing plants meeting this growth demand.
